The South African Farmers Development Association Projects and Partnerships

the MINTIRHO FOUNDATION project

The Mintirho Foundation entered into an ground-breaking partnership with the South African Farmers’ Development Association (SAFDA) to help develop a fertilizer Plant for emerging sugar-cane farmers in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, and to provide logistical support to help them get their product to mills timeously

SAFDA

Sugarcane logistics and fertiliser production

The South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA) was established in 2015 as a non-profit organisation and registered with the Department of Social Development. It has a special focus on supporting small-scale and land reform farmers in respect of ownership of freehold sugarcane farming land; equity in agro-processing factories (mills); representation in the industry decision making structures; and the farmers’ ability to speak for themselves and determine their future. Mintirho provided funding to two SAFDA-owned entities, namely SAFDA Fertilizer and SAFDA Farm Management Services. SAFDA Fertilizer acquired a 75% stake in a fertilizer blending facility with a loan from the Mintirho Foundation Trust. SAFDA Farm Management Services acquired five trucks and trailers and one cane loader to service their growers by hauling their cane to the mill and delivering fertilizer sold by SAFDA Fertilizer to the member-growers.
