Fertilizer Project

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and the South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA) entered into a Service Level Agreement in 2018 to provide support to black sugar cane farmers and their immediate communities.

SAFDA in November 2018 during its 3^rd anniversary, SAFDA made an appeal to government to assist the small- scale communal and land reform farmers. SAFDA highlighted the income crisis facing small scale farmers and indicated that limited or no ratooning (timeous fertilizer and weeding control) will mainly result in drop-in yields. This would compromise the sustainability of small to medium-scale farming enterprises thus relegating the black farmers out production. The DRDLR has noted the potential negative impact of this imminent crisis on rural farmers and their communities.  The DRDLR has responded by partnering with SAFDA to provide fertilizer for the forthcoming season. This intervention will contribute to the increase of production yields thus increasing profitability and sustaining existing and, in most cases, creating new jobs.
